INRAE-CNRS collective scientific assessment conference:
"Plastics used in agriculture and for food: uses, properties and impacts"
Because of low cost and many other interesting properties, plastics are increasingly used in the agricultural and food system, mainly to protect crops, conserve forage and package food. However, this use is accompanied by increases in plastic pollution. This is the backdrop to the issues surrounding the uses, properties and impacts of plastics, which are of concern to society and public authorities in France, Europe and internationally.
To shed light on these issues, the French Agency for ecological transition (ADEME) and the Ministries in charge of agriculture, food and ecological transition requested a collective scientific assessment to INRAE and the CNRS. The study was carried out by a multidisciplinary group of around thirty European scientists. It reviews the scientific knowledge available on plastics used in agriculture and for food, from their production to their fate in the environment.
Scientists have mobilised a systemic and historical approach to understand the role of plastics and question their sustainability in food value chains. They investigated relationships between the petroleum- and bio-sourced origin of plastics, their composition and properties. They examined the scientific knowledge available on plastic waste management strategies, recycling and biodegradation in particular, as well as the dispersion of plastics and the resulting impacts on the health of both continental ecosystems and humans.
The conclusions of the collective scientific assessment - including the knowledge gaps - will be presented by the scientists, and will be the subject of exchanges with the stakeholders involved in these issues.
